Solar panels produce electricity for you to use in your home all year round. Due to the size of our system in the summer it will produce far more free electricity than you can make use of. A lot of this electricity will be fed back to the grid (exported electricity). In the winter, as there is much less light due to the shorter days, the system will not meet all your energy requirements. These seasonal variations affect all solar pv systems installed in the UK, not just ours.

Over the course of a year the reality is that people rarely utilise all the power from their panels so the figure that our customers actually cut their electricity bills by in 2011 was £197.21 saving based on a 37% bill reduction. If you are able to use more you would save more. The figure of 37% is the average based on our study of customer savings. Some of our customers have reduced their bills by much more than this.

DECC figures show that during 2011 our average electricity bill in the UK was £533. The average amount of electricity consumed was 3,932kWh at a cost of 13.55 pence/kWh. So on an average annual UK electricity bill of £533 and using the average reduction of 37%, you can save £197.21.

How we worked out these figures.

We see a lot of exaggerated and a lot of extremely pessimistic claims on the internet as to how well a typical solar photovoltaic system will work in practice. We know they are exaggerated or pessimistic because we've now installed thousands of free systems, and we monitor their performance every day, we also have feedback from our many customers and we've installed import/export meters on a random selection of 50 properties, meaning that we can very accurately monitor those. Accordingly, we believe that we have more data about the efficacy of solar pv than any company or organisation in the UK. Many of our systems are now over two years old.

To calculate our figures we use the official 2011 figures from DECC for energy usage and cost.


The cost of electricity.

There are literally hundreds of different tariffs and charges and so we have to make an assumption for how much people pay for a unit of electricity. The cost of a unit of electricity is measured in pence per kilowatt hour. Some companies make high assumptions on these costs; we take the average cost as stated by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. We assume 13.55 pence/kWh as this is what people on average actually paid during 2011. By comparison the Energy Savings Trust assumes a rate of 14.39 pence/kWh in their calculations.

Note (EST specify a higher standard rate for electricity in their calculations of 14.39 pence/kWh but we have used the lower 13.55 pence/kWh as these more closely reflect prices paid in 2011).

From 1990 to 2011 domestic electricity prices have doubled. Based on the same rate of increase over the next 25 years the average cost of electricity will increase to 26 pence/kWh. That equates to about half a penny on the standard rate year on year.

Assuming a yearly 0.005 pence/kWh rise on electricity prices the average customer would be saving between £379 a year on their £1024 electricity bills after 25 years of having one of our systems installed.

Long term energy savings.

The solar photovoltaic systems that we fit are guaranteed to work for 25 years, that's because we monitor and maintain them and do so at no cost to our customers. This means that as an ASG customer you are going to save an average of 37% on your electricity bill every year for at least 25 years.

The table below shows how much you can expect to be saving over a 25 year period. Our starting point is the 2011 (year 0) average cost of a kilowatt of electricity at 13.55 pence and the average electricity bill at £533. So in year 1 the cost of electricity increases by half a penny to 14.05 pence and you would expect to save £204.41 on your energy bill that year.
